The temporary filtration system installation was completed late on Friday, March 24, 2017. Finished water samples were sent off to a private, third party laboratory for analysis. Sample results were received on Sunday, March 26th. The filtration system is successfully removing the contamination. Residents are being advised today, March 27th, that they can begin using their water for drinking, cooking and bathing. EPA will maintain and continue to sample the filtered water until the permanent waterline is installed.

March 21, 2017 Update 3/21/2017 Site Update

Installation of a multi-stage temporary charcoal drinking water filtration system began on March 22, 2017, and is anticipated to be completed by March 24, 2017. Once the installation is complete, the EPA will sample the water to ensure it meets drinking water safety standards. Upon receipt of the sampling results, the EPA will notify the community whether it is safe to resume using the water again; presumably by Friday, March 24, 2017. The EPA will then test the water weekly to assure that the filtration system is removing the contaminants. The charcoal filter media will be replaced if or when there is any indication contamination. The final plan is to connect the mobile home park to the municipal water system (Two Rivers Utilities). This process can take several months. We will maintain the filtration system until the water line is installed.

March 9, 2017 Update 3/9/2017 Site Update
OSC Eichinger met onsite with NCDEQ and the Property Owners. NCDEQ will continue to provide bottled water to the residents. NCDEQ has identified three offsite potential responsible parties. The property owners granted EPA access to conduct private well sampling, install temporary filtration systems and connect the impacted residents to the municipal drinking water system. START collected confirmatory water samples from two private wells that are know to be contaminated. Samples results are expected late on Friday, March 10, 2017. ERRS Contractor is currently researching point of entry drinking water certified filtration systems to be installed on two contaminated wells that service 9 properties. NCDEQ sampled additional properties including two wells that are adjacent to the known contaminated wells. START collected surface water samples from an unnamed tributary of the Catawba Creek. The additional residences will be added to the emergency removal action based on the results of their well samples.
