The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 has compiled the Administrative Record (AR) for the Mercury Harrison Street Superfund Site in Kansas City, Missouri. The AR is the official site file that contains technical documents with respect to response actions at the site. EPA developed this document collection to form a clear understanding of the site.

EPA removed mercury and mercury-impacted materials from a residence in Kansas City, Missouri, and ventilated the building.

Mercury - Harrison Street Spot Report (initial) 12/15/2023 Site Update
Overview: At approximately 11:00 A.M. on December 14, 2023, mercury was discovered by a contractor in the basement of a residential home during renovations. It was reported that the contractor observed 2 tablespoons of mercury. The residents, including two children, and the contractor evacuated the home and contacted Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) to report the spill. No known community impacts at this time.

State, Local and other Federal Agency Actions and Roles: MoDNR requested federal assistance and dispatched two State OSCs to assist U.S. EPA OSCs. MoDNR screened the front entrance for mercury vapors and found concentration great than or equal to the 50,000 ng/m3. MoDNR did not make entry to the building. MoDNR contacted Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services to assist the residents.

EPA Actions and Roles: EPA has dispatched two OSCs and START contract support with monitoring equipment.
