Site Description 3/20/2025 Background
On Friday, March 14, 2025, a gas station in Hyrum, UT received a delivery of 4,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline. The new delivery truck driver mistakenly pumped the fuel into an out-of-service above ground storage tank, which leaked out of the unsealed tank access port unnoticed and onto the ground, passing through the earthen containment berm. Shortly thereafter, Hyrum City officials received a report from a local resident of petroleum vapors emanating from a storm drain down gradient of the gas station, dispatching the local water quality department to investigate. Simultaneously, the fuel supplier mobilized a cleanup contractor to the site, discovering the source of the spill and beginning containment and recovery of spilled fuels from a nearby stormwater pond. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UTDEQ) responded to assess the impacts and oversee efforts by the potentially responsible parties (PRPs), ultimately making an NRC report on their behalf on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Based upon consultations with UTDEQ and potential threats to waters of the United States (Spring Creek and Little Bear River), an OSC was mobilized to the site to assess the spill and assist with recovering fuel from the environment on March 18th, 2025.
