Activities completed during the week of 10/05/2026 include the following:

• Conducted oversight on ongoing removal activities, documenting progress with site photos and field documentation.
• Conducted daily air sampling for asbestos and air monitoring for particulates at four locations around the site perimeter.
• Continued to stockpile material for future loadout and transportation/disposal.
• Continued transportation/disposal of asbestos containing material to approved off site Southside Landfill.
• Began scraping 2 inches of soil and bringing in clean backfill, provided by Huerfano County, for remediated areas of the property.
• 41 trucks containing approximately 20 cubic yards of material each were hauled off site for disposal during the week. Totaling in 1,520 cubic yards of material transported/disposed of for the site.

Planned Activities during the week of 10/12/2026 include the following:

• Continue bringing in clean backfill provided by Huerfano County for entire area of property.
• Demobilization of all sub-contractors and On-Scene Coordinator on site.

• 20 trucks containing approximately 25 cubic yards of material each were hauled off site for disposal during the week.
• 700 total cubic yards of Asbestos containing material disposed of so far.

EPA, Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractors, and Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contractors mobilized to the Site on Monday, September 21, 2026.

Activities completed during the week of 9/21/2026 include the following:

• Conducted oversight on ongoing removal activities, documenting progress with site photos and field documentation.
• Conducted daily air sampling for asbestos and air monitoring for particulates at four locations around the site perimeter.
• Received and staged equipment and supplies needed for completion of removal activities.
• Removed the wrought iron fence and Antiques signage from the north and west side of the site. Removed fencing and signage given to the Huerfano County staff.
• Conducted vegetation management, cutting back overgrown vegetation around the site.
• Disconnected fire damaged communication lines from the site, after conversations with Century Link.
• Began demolition of on-site structures.
• Began to stockpile material for future loadout and transportation/disposal.
• Began transportation/disposal of asbestos containing material in an approved off site landfill.
• 8 trucks containing approximately 25 cubic yards of material each were hauled off site for disposal during the week.
• 200 total cubic yards of Asbestos containing material disposed of so far.

Planned activities during the week of 9/28/2026 include the following:

• Continue transportation/disposal of asbestos containing material in an approved off site landfill.

• EPA On-scene Coordinators met with Huerfano County Economic Development, Huerfano County Fire, City of Walsenburg, and Walsenburg Police personnel to discuss traffic control and plans of mobilizing to begin demolition on September 21, 2026.

• EPA contractors began collecting background particulate and asbestos air sampling data for later comparison when the excavation, loading, and transport operations are underway. Collection of particulate monitoring data and air samples will continue throughout the entire action to monitor potential exposures and offsite migration of asbestos fibers. 

• Arrangements have been made to comply with the packaging and transportation requirements related to the disposal of ACM debris from the Site at the Southside Landfill in Pueblo, Colorado, which has been verified for compliance with the CERCLA Off-Site Rule (OSR) in 40 CFR Part 300.440.  

EPA On-scene coordinators began coordinating with CDPHE and CDOT to plan for traffic control on W. 7th St. in Walsenburg, CO. The former hospital and residence have power lines and street lights located along the entire properties perimeter except W. 7th St. To ensure the safety of staff, reduce cost, and time of the removal, EPA On-scene Coordinators are looking at viable options that will not hinder the flow of traffic, avoid removing or disconnecting power lines, and allow contractors to load material into disposal trucks directly onto W 7th St. 

• EPA On-scene Coordinators conducted an initial site visit and met with Huerfano county personnel to discuss property access, if there were any radiological/hazmat concerns - there are no concerns, access to fire hydrants to spray water during removal activities for dust control, assessing traffic control, and discussing potential disposal facilities within the area.

• EPA also coordinated with the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. The State Archaeologist and Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer and Architectural Services Manager stated that the former Old Hospital/Antique Mall and residence likely no longer have historical integrity due to fire damage.
