Ryeland Road Arsenic Site, Womelsdorf, PA Volunteers from the Remedial and BTAG programs continued an in-house Phytoremediation Pilot Study this week harvesting 500 ferns in a down gradient wetland to remove arsenic from the ecosystem. Initial results indicate the ferns are successfully removing arsenic (219 parts per million) from the springs and sediment, though more detailed sampling and analysis will be performed on the harvested material. Eliminating the source of contamination from the former residences along Ryeland Road is continuing as scheduled, with approximately 40,000 tons of arsenic contaminated soil excavated and disposed offsite. Additional samples shall be collected from the subsurface later this month to further define the extent of contamination adjacent to the railroad tracks prior to determining if sheet piling will be required to protect the integrity of the rail line.
