Salient for the Week of 011810 1/21/2010 Site Update

Through January 20, 2010, approximately 6,000 tons of lead-contaminated soil have been excavated from the banks of the site.  This soil contained lead concentrations up to 56,200 mg/kg, which was verified by laboratory analytical data.  Analytical results also confirmed lead at 107 mg/L TCLP; the site soils are hazardous.  Transportation and disposal operations will tentatively begin on January 26, 2010.

Salient 12/17/2009 Site Update

Update on Twin Cities Iron and Metal Site, Bristol City, VA – Through December 16, 2009, approximately 4,000 tons have been excavated from the banks of the site.  This soil contained lead concentrations up to 56,200 mg/kg, which was verified by laboratory analytical data.  Analytical results to determine TCLP concentrations of the stockpiled soils are anticipated to be received on December 18, 2009.  Operations will cease at the Site from December 19, 2009, to January 3, 2010, for the Christmas Holiday. Salient 12/17/2009 Site Update

On October 28, 2009, OSC Kelly initiated a Removal Action at the Site.  The major contaminant at the Site is lead, which was detected up to 149,000 mg/kg in the Site soils, and up to 677 mg/kg in the Site sediments.  The Removal Action will include excavation and T&D of contaminated soils on Site, along with stabilization of the excavated slope along the creek bank of the Site. Presently, the contractor is clearing and grubbing the Site due to heavy vegetation and debris.  There is a heavy concentration of fiber glass construction pieces in the contaminated zone and it must be removed to access the soils.

Salient 12/12/2008 Site Update
Twin City Iron and Metal Site, Bristol, Washington County, Virginia - On December 9th, the OSC, along with START contractors, visited the site to further evaluate site conditions and to collect soil, sediment, and water samples. Using the X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analyzer, START detected readings for lead ranging between 31 ppm to 172,000 ppm. A total of 25 laboratory samples were collected and shipped for confirmation. Samples will be analyzed for metals and PCB’s. Invalidated results are expected within 14 days, while validated results should be reported in 30 days. In addition, the OSC invited the Army Corps of Engineers to the site in order to evaluate conditions and estimate the cost for engineering alternatives. An EPA civil investigator, along with the CIC, visited nearby residences in hopes of obtaining historical information regarding past activities at the site. The investigator also visited local courthouses and government offices and interviewed former employees of a previous operator at the Site to gather information and historical records on the property. The CIC spoke with the city manager and distributed fact sheets to nearby residences in order to notify them of EPA's activities. Early indications show that local interest in EPA's activities is low. (Bob Kelly 4-3268, Cindy Santiago 4- , Francisco J. Cruz 4-5528, Carlyn Prisk 4-2625)
