PRODUCTS THAT SUPPORT DETECTION OF CONTAMINATION

1) Field Screening Equipment Information Document

This document is a companion to the Standardized Analytical Methods for Environmental Restoration Following Homeland Security Events (SAM). During development of SAM, EPA recognized the need for a companion document to identify the capabilities of field equipment currently in use or being considered by EPA, to screen sites for the presence of the SAM analytes. This document is intended to address this need, in part, by providing information regarding the capabilities of field equipment currently being used or considered by EPA on-scene coordinators (OSC), for detecting chemical and radiochemical analytes listed in SAM.

2) Rapid Screening and Preliminary Identification Techniques and Methods

This document is another companion to the Standardized Analytical Methods for Environmental Restoration Following Homeland Security Events (SAM). During development of SAM, EPA recognized that there may be situations in which laboratories receive large numbers of samples or when rapid analyses are needed to support decision making. This document is intended to partially address these situations by providing summary information regarding techniques, instruments, and/or methods that can be used for rapid laboratory screening of samples and preliminary identification of the chemical and radiochemical analytes listed in SAM.

3) Detection of Biological Suspensions Using Online Detectors in a Drinking Water Distribution System Simulator

Detection of low density microbial suspensions was evaluated with a suite of online water quality sensors and instruments. Typically, the drinking water industry uses online sensors to measure parameters such as free chlorine, pH, and conductivity; however, in microbial suspensions below105 cfu/mL, the sensors have a weak response or are ineffective. Therefore, sensors designed to detect either particulates in water or organic compounds that might accompany microbial suspensions were evaluated for their ability to detect low density microbial suspensions.

PRODUCTS THAT SUPPORT DECONTAMINATION OF BUILDINGS OR OUTDOOR AREAS

1) Assessment of Fumigants for Decontamination of Surfaces Contaminated with Chemical

Warfare Agents

This report addresses questions regarding the effectiveness of two decontamination technologies (steam and vaporous hydrogen peroxide modified with ammonia - mVHP®) against four selected chemical warfare applied to four different indoor building material surfaces (decorative laminate, industrial-grade carpet, galvanized metal, and ceiling tile).

2) Compatibility of Material and Electronic Equipment with Chlorine Dioxide Fumigation

Chlorine dioxide gas (ClO2) fumigation has been used successfully for the remediation of several federal buildings contaminated by Bacillus anthracis spores.  This report provides information on the effects of potentially corrosive ClO2 gas on sensitive electronic components and materials, which substituted for the types of components also found in high-end military and commercial equipment such as medical devices and airport scanners.

NEW SOFTWARE

1) EPANET Multi-Species Extension Software

EPANET is used in homeland security research to model contamination threats to water systems. Historically, EPANET has been limited to tracking the dynamics of a single chemical transported through a network of pipes and storage tanks.  Recently, the NHSRC released a new extension to EPANET called EPANET-MSX (Multi-Species eXtension) that allows for the consideration of multiple interacting species in the bulk flow and on the pipe walls. This capability has been incorporated into both a stand-alone executable program as well as a toolkit library of functions that programmers can use to build customized applications.

2) Incident Waste Management Planning & Response Tool (IWMPRT)

This decision support tool organizes large amounts of information related to managing waste resulting from incidents of national significance (e.g., contaminated buildings and natural disasters). The tool can be used by individuals responsible for making disposal decisions. The tool provides access to technical information, regulations, and guidance to work through important waste management issues to assure safe and efficient removal, transport and disposal of waste materials. Specifically, the tool allows users to:

  • Create an incident planning and/or response record;
  • Access debris/waste estimators;
  • Access treatment and disposal facility databases; and/or
  • Access guidance and documents.
