In Memory of Dean
Dean,
When you left, our country lost one of its heros and I lost a dear friend. I've learned so much from you, as an emergency responder and as a man who prioritizes his family. You were bigger than life, yet knew how to 'be' in the moment. As a leader, you had the gift of drawing out the best in others. You never shied from a challenge, no matter how great the obstacles. I am honored to have worked with you, blessed to call you friend and I'm a better man for knowing you. I thank God for putting you in my way!
Godspeed my friend, until we meet again.

In Memory of Dean
There is a lot to admire about Dean. The thing I admire most about him is his courage. He had the physical courage to dive in dark, cold water and don Level A to sample cylinders of who knows what at the Flura Chemical site, but more importantly he had moral courage. Dean knew what was right and that is what he did; no matter what others might think of him. He leaves a lasting legacy for those of us he leaves behind - may we all summon the courage to be like Dean.

Grace and Strength

In Memory of Dean
I have had the pleasure of working with Dean in several different arenas over the years, starting back in days of Methyl Parathion in Regions 4,5 and 6. From the very beginning I was impressed with his knowledge, dedication, and positive attitude. His impact at the EPA, and in our surrounding communities, was immeasurable and irreplacable. But my favorite memory of Dean happened outside of the work place. Several years ago we lost a long time ERRS contractor and dear friend in Region 4 to lung cancer. Dean and I attended the funeral with several other Region 4 OSCs. During the funeral service I became upset, and Dean reached out to comfort me. I will never forget sitting there with Dean wondering what was he was thinking given his own circumstances, yet he was the one comforting others. His grace and strength were admirable, and words cannot describe how touched I was. He will be missed greatly. Wishing his family and friends peace and comfort in their memories of good times with a great man...........

A True Inspiration

In Memory of Dean
Having met Dean almost four years ago, I was struck by his calm and caring demeanor. I was instantly impressed by the depth of his knowledge and his ability to forge collaboration at all levels. Soon thereafter, I got to know him more than a colleague and was proud to call him friend. He was always "on the spot" with his advice and insights during an emergency, but moreso always had an encouraging word. His positive attitude and spirit were infectious; you could not help but be drawn to his warmth and joyous spirit.
During Deepwater Horizon, I saw Dean's true character. Visibly suffering from the effects of his disease and treatment, he came regularly to the ICP to contribute to the historic effort. He wanted to be there for the community and people that he loved; he wanted to be there because it was his duty (though no one expected it); he wanted to be there because he knew he could contribute (and he certainly did); and he wanted to be there because it was his passion. He was an inspiration to us all, and I was so proud and honored to have worked with him. If I had one to give, I would have presented Dean the game ball for DWH because of his contributions; he prompted us all to ask what more we could each give to the effort, and he taught us that our measure of success is in how we serve others and commit to causes much bigger than ourselves. He pushed us to excellence, as was his nature.
Dean was a dear friend to me and the Coast Guard. We all are better for knowing him, and the Gulf Coast is a better place because of his tireless efforts.

Big Dean

In Memory of Dean
The first project Dean and I worked on was in 1996. From day one I was struck by his positive demeanor and can do attitude. Over the years we worked on some big projects together, never had a cross word, and shared some good laughs. Dean always called me "GP" and and I always addressed him as "Big Dean". Though several years could go by without us seeing each other when we did run into each other Dean treated you like he'd just hung out with you the day before. He would always ask how was the family and how are you were doing. At DWH he was going through a rough time with treatments but he never complained and gave it his best. That was the essence of Dean.
So old friend , I'll see you on the other side. Save me a seat for that Jerry solo accoustic set.

Quick Smile and Easy Laugh

In Memory of Dean
I will always remember his quick smile and easy laugh. We worked together during the Hurricane Katrina response and despite the horrific devastation, Dean was always optimistic and upbeat. It was clear that while he took his job seriously, he also had the unique ability to epitomize the resilience of the human spirit.
May this time of loss bring all of us to a place of peace and understanding.
With love,

In Memory of Dean
One of my favorite memories of my short time as an OSC was taking a drive from some training or meeting in Biloxi to Dean's house on to eat at Lulu's with Dean, Carter and John. I think it was a 2 hour drive for dinner. Dean had a way of making you feel included and that you belong--Yes! You are in the right place and we have something for you to do here!
My thoughts are with his family, and with the OSCs, as I know their hearts are broken.

In Memory of Dean
I first met Dean when I was looking for instructors for a Compressed Gas Course for OSC Readiness. Dean was happy to step up and teach without any hesitation. As an instructor to his peer, he had the skill to reach every level of OSC in his class. Not an easy task! I then continued to have the pleasure of working with Dean on a couple of national EPA workgroups. Dean was always the ultimate professional but still was able to be a friend to all. I could always rely on his wisdom, regardless of the subject and was able to bring reason to an heated discussions. He will be missed! My prayers go out to his family in this terrible and trying time. God bless.

The Total Package
6/25/2011
In Memory of Dean
I knew of Dean from seeing some site videos that gave me instant respect for some of the work he had done. I think the first time I met him was at the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. He came down to check on us in Dive Ops to help out on several occasions. He extended respect to me which I had yet to earn. He be-friended me which he did everyone, but down the road when his name came up with newer OSCs, it felt good inside to be able to say "Yeah - he's a good friend of mine!". He was the total package in my book.
Eternal rest be granted to him Oh Lord, let the perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace - Amen

In Memory of Dean
I met Dean at EPA well before he got to the land of emergency response. He wanted to be part of OSC-dom, to do effective environmental work so we talked about contacts and possible vacancies. He got his wish!
Later as he found out about the outposts, he wished for that assignment, to be more responsive to the work and the people. He got his wish!
He so wished to experience love and life, and did so fully through Jamie and Marley. He got his wish!
Then as he faced this terrible illness, he wished for strength and time to be able to savor his loved ones. He got his wish (albeit not as long as we all hoped and prayed for)!
Dean's courage and continued grace showed what we ourselves wish for our lives: the ability to care, to love and to be!
He touched many and for that, we give thanks that he came our way. Dean is now free of pain - we are not!
Our prayers are with Jamie and Marley now and will continue.

In Memory of Dean
I first met Dean in North Carolina, when I came down from Chicago as a new young OSC to help clean up from hurricanes. He welcomed me with warmth and found ways for me to learn as much as possible. I left feeling empowered and positive. Dean's love of life was apparent, and his ability to make most things fun only increased his professionalism. His unique combination of positive energy, care for those around him and hard work was inspiring to see. I was amazed when I had the pleasure of working with him again in Mobile last summer that none of his joy or warmth had been diminished by his battle with cancer. Although Dean brought his bright energy to work everyday, the brightest I saw him was when our work conversation devolved into talking about our children and families. He knew what mattered the most. I am truly sorry that I will not have the pleasure of working alongside Dean again. My heart is with Dean's family, and Region 4.

My Dearest Friend, Brother, and Mentor,
Words cannot express how proud we are of you and what you meant to us. I am so gratefull for your fiendship and am honored to have been your brother. Your integrity, courage, work ethic, and character will always serve as a standard for me.
Before my recent trip to Washington, you told me the story of how as a young man in the Army you set out early one Spring to climb Mount Olympus only to be dissapointed that you were not the first that year to put down fresh tracks.
My only comfort is knowing that you are putting down fresh tracks on your greatest climb now. And when you reach the Summit, you will know perfect peace and love.
We will mis your dearly and cherish our memnories of you always.
God Bless and Keep you and yours.
Your Brother,

Gosh this is hard! I first met Dean in Division A, Hancock Co, during Katrina. Dean was just a great guy! We worked hard, had a lot of laughs, and learned a lot from each other. The long days didn't seem so long with Dean around!
My prayers go out to Dean and his family. And also to all the OSCs and staff in Region 4. Rock On!

I met Dean 25 years ago when we both co-oped with ADEM. Dean was a great friend. We had some great times fishing, diving, going to dives, avoiding fights, and having fun. He introduced me to some great music and a joy for living life. When I was hanging out with Dean, we never sat around. We always did something. I saw Dean a few times in the last few years and it was like we had just seen each other yesterday. I will miss him, but we had some great times that I will never forget. He will live on in all of our memories. The world is a lesser place. Good Bye Buddy.

Hurricanes, spills, & Hazmat drills... How many times did we take for granted that Dean was there and asking, suggesting and coaching us through whatever the mess was. Always quick witted, willing to help, and sometimes giving us that look that said "are you serious...." Through it all he kept positive attitude and outlook, even under the most difficult of circumstances. A man of charature, honor, passion and integrity. You will be missed my friend. Condolences to, and best wishes for the family.

I met Dean during Hurricane Katrina, and I served under him as a Division Supervisor. While working with him, I developed a deep respect of who he was. He was a "True Leader", he always had a smile, he was always positive, and he was always there to assist you when you needed help. I feel priviledged to have worked under Dean and I value the time I got to spend with him. For only working with him for a year, he made an impression on me that I will strive to obtain. We will trully miss him and our prayers are with Region 4, and with his family. He was trully one of a kind!

Dean was such an inspiration to me. He was a gentleman and hero. When I learned about his heroic efforts in the Air Florida crash I knew he was a man who cared about others which was the thing that made him a great OSC and friend. This world is a better place for having Dean in it even if it was only for a short time. My prayers are with his wife and daughter at this time of great loss.

A finer man I have never met
6/23/2011
In Memory of Dean
Truly, a finer man I have never met. As an OSC, he was the mentor/colleague I most admired and aspired to emulate. Dean radiated warmth, and his profound humanity lightened our spirits, brought us together in camaraderie, and taught us that the bond of friendship has no limits. One of my first responses as an OSC was the Hurricane Isabel response on North Carolina coast. Dean was the IC, and he took me under his wing. From then on, he was a source of constant encouragement both professionally and personally. His friendship was genuinely as fine a gift as one could have. In the midst of cancer treatments, he would express happiness about good things occurring in my life. Amazing.
Jamie and Marley, my thoughts are with you. Dean adored you both, and you carry the magnificent legacy of his love with you at all times.

From my first interaction with Dean, I knew I had met a true friend, mentor, and American. He took me in with a handshake and charismatic smile and now leaves me saddened by his loss but truly honored to have known him.
We spoke numerous times during the most painful treatments, but he always was remarkably upbeat. My last conversation with him was about the endearing love he had for his family. He loved you so much.
Thank you Dean for your blessing of life and what you did for you country and its people in times of need.
You will be deeply missed.

Dean helped me with one of my first Removal Sites 5 years ago. He advised me on the technical aspects of the Site, but more importantly he helped me deal with some of the difficult emotions I was struggling with as a young OSC managing a complex Site. From that moment on I was touched by Dean’s intensity and depth. I was delighted every chance I got to see him, simply because of the energy he exuded. Dean cared a lot. About his family and friends, his work and his colleagues. He put all of himself into everything he did. We have lost someone special, but may we gain the gift of learning to live a little more fully.
My thoughts and prayers are with Jamie and Marley, and everyone who loved him. May your hearts be filled with memories of the laughs and smiles that Dean brought with him.

In Memory of Dean
Dean exhibited a great deal of heroism, and the last heroic act I witnessed was the grace and humility he expressed during his terrible illness. Even at it's worst, he was gracious enough to care about how you were doing.. My heart is incredibly saddened, but I am relieved that his burden has been lifted.
One of my first encounters with Dean was nearly 20 yrs. ago. I was asked to take him on the road and act as a mentor for this new OSC and show him the ropes. On that trip, we shared our backgrounds. I didn't find out until later that he was involved with the rescue efforts in the aftermath of the Air Florida crash in 1982 while in the military. At that point, I began to question who was teaching whom!
I learned a lot of life lessons from Dean, much more than he will ever know.
May God bless him and his family, and may he rest in peace.

When I first came to EPA they asked for volunteers for the Aids Training and I volunteered. Dean was also among the volunteers and we teamed up to do the trainings. One wise guy made a remark that was out of line and Dean stepped up and very politely, and with a lot of depth, told the guy he was off base and that this was a serious illness. I remember thinking that this on the surface party guy was much more. My condolences to his wife and daughter to everyone that will miss him.

My heart is saddened yet my memories fond of the times I spent with Dean and his family. Here's to a great guy- I knew Dean only a short few years but he certainly made an impression on me. He was a very positive person- always encouraging, a dedicated hard worker, and loved to have a good time. I first met him at OSC Readiness when it was down in Florida. I was hired that previous August and, at the time, was very new to the OSC community. Not only did he only have positive words of encouragement about the job, but he quickly welcomed me as a friend and made me feel like I belonged. Over the years we have had some great times. He may not have truely known the significant impact he had on a young OSC from Region 01, but it was substantial. I will always remember him as a true friend, excellent coworker, and a heck of a great guy.
