The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is cleaning up the former Kiser Plating site, 401 E. Howard St. EPA is removing contaminated soil at the now-vacant property and checking nearby residences for an environmental problem called “vapor intrusion.” Vapor intrusion occurs when chemicals in soil or underground water give off dangerous gases that can seep into buildings through foundation cracks and holes, causing unsafe indoor air pollution.
EPA officials will answer questions about the cleanup at a public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Maring-Hunt Library, 2005 S. High St. Please plan to attend if you live in the area bounded by Mulberry Street, East Adams Street, Monroe Street, and East First Street, and learn how you can have your property tested for vapor intrusion at no cost to you.
