Applications for NAU Job Training 12/10/2014 Job Training

Applications for the Navajo Nation Environmental Workforce Development training are due January 30.  The training will take place in Flagstaff from April 20 - May 15.   The application and more information about the program are available online at http://www4.nau.edu/itep/nnwf/.  This training is sponsored by the Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals at Northern Arizona University (NAU), with funding provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

All applicants are also encouraged to apply for Navajo Nation Workforce Development (NNWD) assistance.  Applicants must apply in person to one of the 5 NNWD centers, located in each agency, and must meet annual income thresholds and other criteria.  NNWD can provide assistance for lodging, meals, gas money, and at times clothing (such as interview clothing), depending on their resources and whether the applicants meet all appropriate criteria.

Contaminated Structures 5/15/2014 Structures
In some instances, community members used contaminated materials from mine sites to build their homes and other structures, exposing themselves and their families to radiation.  EPA is supporting Navajo Nation EPA in their efforts to test homes and structures.  EPA works with Navajo Nation EPA to take appropriate response actions when structures are found to pose a health risk.  For information regarding the screening of structures, contact the Navajo Superfund Program at (800) 314-1846.

Warning Signs at A&B No. 3 5/15/2014 Site Update

A&B No. 3 is an abandoned uranium mine located near HWY 89 and the Little Colorado River. The mine has been identified as a priority mine by EPA and Navajo Nation EPA due to its proximity to homes, high levels of gamma radiation, and accessibility by community members. In 2014 EPA will install warning signs around the site as a short-term measure to discourage people from going on the site while investigations continue.

UPDATE - warning signs were installed around A&B No. 3 the week of August 18, 2014
