October 18, 2004 Update 10/22/2004
During the last couple of weeks, operations have been concentrated on returning rented items and left over supplies and administratively closing down the project. The crew was pared down to just the response manager and the foreman. Members from the NAC were provided the seeds that will be broadcasted throughout the “island parcel”. A subcontract was awarded for replacing fencing that was removed during our efforts and that work is expected to be completed by October 29th. The command post trailer will be picked up also on the 29th and the project will be officially demobilized..
September 27, 2004 Update 10/4/2004
During this week, vacuum operations were completed as was the off-site disposal of all stockpiled lead contaminated material. Sixteen loads of lead contaminated material were shipped for off-site disposal, bringing the total number of non-hazardous shipments to 256(est. 4,025 tons). In addition, two hazardous loads, one load of 24 drums with soil and lead shot and one roll-off of the soil was shipped off-site for treatment/disposal. These two loads bring the total number of hazardous shipments to 128(est. 2,065 tons). All removal activities except for placement of topsoil, seeding, and chafing have been completed. The next couple of weeks will consist of returning rental equipment and packing files prior to demobilizing the Site. The command post trailer has been scheduled for pickup on Friday, October 15th. A press release is being developed and an event planned for inviting press, local elected officials and all interested community members for a tour of the project area. Once a date and time have been established, notification will be made. All particulate data have been posted on the website.
September 20, 2004 Updata 9/30/2004
During this week, vacuum operations continued in the lower millrace. A small excavator continues to load-out stockpiled material. This material is so saturated from recent rainfalls that it’s next too impossible to vacuum. Vacuumed material continues to be stockpiled pending off-site disposal. Fifteen loads of lead contaminated material were shipped for off-site disposal, bringing the total number of shipments to 240. During non-rainfall periods, particulate meters and air pumps are stationed at one upwind location, two downwind locations and at one location across the street from Fall Creek Elementary School. September 13, 2004 Update 9/20/2004
During this week, vacuum operations were completed in the second plunge pool and adjacent rock wall/ledge. A small excavator was mobilized on Tuesday to expedite the load-out of stockpiled material. Vacuumed material continues to be stockpiled pending off-site disposal. This material is so saturated from recent rainfalls that it’s next too impossible to vacuum. Twelve loads of lead contaminated material were shipped for off-site disposal, bringing the total number of shipments to 225. During non-rainfall periods, particulate meters and air pumps are stationed at one upwind location, two downwind locations and at one location across the street from Fall Creek Elementary School. September 06, 2004 Update 9/13/2004
Vacuum operations resumed on Tuesday after remobilizing from the Labor Day recess. During the shortened work period, operations continued in the second plunge pool and adjacent rock wall/ledge. A fire hose continued to be used to wash down material too dangerous for workers to pursue. Vacuumed material continues to be stockpiled pending off-site disposal. One load of lead contaminated material was shipped for off-site disposal, bringing the total number of shipments to 213. A shipment of 95 trees was delivered and will be planted soon. During non-rainfall periods, particulate meters and air pumps are stationed at one upwind location, two downwind locations and at one location across the street from Fall Creek Elementary School. August 30 '04 Update 9/10/2004
During this week period, work continued to be concentrated on vacuuming operations in the second plunge pool and adjacent rock wall/ledge. A fire hose was used to wash down lead contaminated material from the steep rock walls. Vacuumed material continues to be stockpiled pending off-site disposal. Five loads of lead contaminated material were shipped for off-site disposal, bringing the total number of shipments to 212. Air monitoring/sampling continues during dry periods in the weather with results posted on the website. The site was demobed to observe the Labor Day weekend, work resumed on Tuesday.
August 23 '04 Update 9/1/2004
During this week period, work continued to be concentrated on vacuuming operations in the second plunge pool. Discussions also continued with representatives of the Natural Areas Commission with regard to the number and types of woody plants and seeds that will be used in revegetating the island parcel. An itemized list was decided upon and an order placed. Delivery is expected during the week of August 30th. Air monitoring/sampling continues during dry periods in the weather. A midsummers break in operations was observed from Thursday, August 12th thru Tuesday, August 17th. Work during the last two-week period concentrated on vacuuming operations in the second plunge pool within the middle millrace area. Discussions were held with representatives from the Natural Areas Commission on the number and types of woody plants and seeds that will be used in revegetating the island parcel. During this week’s activities, the crew continued vacuuming operations in an area between the Ithaca Gun factory and the middle portion of the millrace. Three loads of non-hazardous lead contaminated material were sent off-site to the Ontario County landfill in Stanley. Together, with previous loads, revised totals of 206 loads (3,095 tons) have been shipped off-site. Representatives from the Natural Areas Commission along with volunteers from the local community were on site during the week to remove more weeds from revegetated areas. Vacuum operations were then moved to the upper end of the project area to address areas between the Ithaca Gun factory and the millrace. During this week’s activities, the crew concentrated their efforts on vacuuming lead contaminated material from sections I-10 and I-11. Lead contaminated material is being vacuumed directly into the vacuum truck and then brought up to top of the paved island area where it is dumped and stockpiled pending off-site disposal. During this week’s activities, the crew concentrated their efforts on vacuuming lead contaminated material from sections I-9 and I-10. Off-site disposal of the stockpiled lead contaminated material continued with seven loads had been sent to the Ontario County landfill. These loads added to previous loads of non-hazardous loads brings the total to 197. Representatives from the Natural Areas Commission were on site Friday to remove weeds from some of the revegetated areas. Air monitoring/sampling continues during dry periods in the weather. June 28, 2004 Update 7/7/2004
During the week’s activities, the crew concentrated their efforts on vacuuming lead contaminated material from sections I-9 and I-10. Off-site disposal of the stockpiled lead contaminated material began last Tuesday and by the end of the week, eight loads had been sent to the Ontario County landfill. These loads added to previous loads of non-hazardous loads brings the total to 190. Approximately seven more loads remain and will be sent off-site on July 6th and 7th. Air monitoring/sampling continues during dry periods in the weather. June 21, 2004 Update 6/29/2004
During the week’s activities, the crew concentrated their efforts on vacuuming lead contaminated material from sections I-7 and I-8. Approximately 200 cubic yards of material have been stockpiled and will be sent for off-site disposal starting on Tuesday, June 29th. On Saturday, accumulated rock, dead tree limbs, dead vegetation and debris were transported from I-10 to a secure area up on the island.
