EPA performs work area and perimeter air monitoring during removal activities. EPA established exclusion zones and contaminant reduction zones to prevent exposures to, and spread of, site contaminants. EPA contractors prepared the Site boiler house for removal activities, including: clearing solid waste and vegeation from roadways and further sealing of doors and windows. Boiler house windows and doorways are prepared for negative-air pressure and air filtration in advance of asbestos removal work. EPA contractors unearthed an underground storage tank of paint. EPA contractors bag ACM from the boiler house floor. Scaffolding is needed to reach old bags of ACM left on top of the boiler furnaces. EPA contrators remove multiple bags of ACM from piping runs in the boiler house. Post cleaning - Flooring and piping runs clear of ACM. Sheets of ACM made friable by metal cutting and scrapping activity. Old trash bags full of ACM were piled on elevated piping and furnace surfaces during metal scrapping. EPA contractors remove soil overburden from a underground storage tank used for paint. The paint in the tank contains toxic Volatile Organic Compounds. Boiler house floor and piping runs after ACM has been removed. Waste asbestos containing materials (ACM) are shipped off-site for proper disposal. The paint UST is pulled from the ground and wastes removed from the tank. Liquid and solid wastes were present in the paint UST. Walls and other surfaces are washed down to remove potential asbestos debris on the surface. The boiler house has been resecured to discourage unauthorized access and additional scrapping on the furnaces and potential exposure to asbestos from the furnace interior. Additional picture of the boiler house secured. Surface debris containing possible ACM is removed from around the near-exterior of the boiler house. Surface debris was removed from soil south of the boiler house. Soil samples for asbestos in this area were non-detect. Surface debris was removed from soil north of the boiler house. Windows in this picture have exterior bars preventing entrance. Boiler house floor including piping trenches were encapsulated after the removal of loose asbestos. Boiler house furnaces were cleaned of accessible asbestos containing material, washed to remove potential fibers, treated with a surface encapsulant to stabilize potential remaining fibers, and posted with Danger - Asbestos signs for what remains on the interior of the structures. Susan Hedman, EPA Regional Administrator, and Mayor Greg Ballard talk after a combined press conference at the Site. The conference detailed EPA and other grants that were awarded to help redevelop the site after conclusion of the removal action. Soils were regraded after removal of a paint UST containing hazardous waste. EPA secured doors and windows of boiler house after accessible ACM was removed. EPA secured drummed wastes pending disposal by a PRP under Agreed Order on Consent.
