The Kriger Battery removal site is located in Greenwood, Caddo Parish, Lousisana on commercial/industrial zoned property. The site is a former battery reclamation facility that operated between 1972 and 1982 and consisted of a processing building, acid neutralization pit, and hammer mill area. Historical sampling conducted by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ)shows on-site lead concentrations as high as 112,660 mg/kg. Elevated lead concentrations have been located off-site on adjoining properties and drainage paths.
Excavation of grids continues. To date, 19.5 off-site grids and 22 on-site grids have been excavated. Of the 41.5 grids excavated, only 6 on-site grids measure lead at a level above the cleanup level. These grids will be reassessed by LDEQ to determine extent of LDEQ removal.
Excavated soils have been stockpiled and sampled for waste profile characterization. Stockpile samples indicated TCLP lead at concentrations well above the 5.0 characterization limit. A bench test was conducted to treat the lead. Bench test results indicated a treatment efficiency such that the treated soils no longer exhibit any hazardous characteristics.
Upon profile acceptance, transportation and disposal of contaminated soils will begin as soon as possible.
Waste profile acceptance. Begin treatment of soils. Begin T&D of treated soils.
Continue grid excavation during T&D operations.
