Current Activities
From July 31- August 14, 2009, EPA completed the process of searching through general debris piles in Buildings # 2 and Building #3 to identify the presence of hazardous materials.  During the search, several drums, containers and bags of unknown powders were collected, staged, and field hazard categorized (HAZCAT).

During the week of August 3-7, 2009, drum sampling operations were continued and Building #2 was prepared for drum removal operations.  This entailed breaking holes in the side of the building on the 3rd and 6th floors due to an inoperable freight elevator. EPA crews then moved empty drums onto the 3rd floor, which were then loaded with miscellaneous solid waste products.  These drums and several full liquid drums were then removed from Building #2 with a crane.

During the week of August 10-14, 2009, the drum and container sampling operations were completed and the consolidation of materials by waste stream was started.  A field chemist inventoried, staged and performed HAZCAT activities on all containers located within the research laboratory in Building #1.  All hazardous and non-hazardous materials were staged near the loading dock in Building #1.

On August 14, 2009, the site was prepared for a temporary demobilization while final T&D activities were coordinated.

During all removal activities, START conducted ambient air monitoring activities both within and around the perimeter of the site for volatile organic compounds (VOC's).  Prior to temporary de-mobilization and during non-working hours, a company was hired to provide security services for Site equipment and infrastructure.
