The State of Idaho Departnment of Environmental Quality requested assistance with the assessment and evaluation of the Northwest Gas & Go service station located in Sandpoint, ID. An indeterminate quantity of petroleum products are found below ground surface. The products are present due to known or suspected historical releases from the service station and other nearby facilities. The products are suspected to be the source of a chronic release to the nearby western shoreline of Sand Creek, a navigable tributary to Lake Pend Oreille. The creek is seasonally inundated by Lake Pend Oreille such that it is indistinguishable by the lake. Sand Creek is a year-round, publically accessible economic, recreation, and environmental resource that flows through downtown Sandpoint.
Initial efforts focused on gathering and interpreting existing data to determine whether additional investigation was required to better understand site conditions. This effort identified a number of data gaps. A two-day sampling event occurred on 03/17-18/05 during which groundwater and product level elevations were measured, groundwater samples were collected from on-site monitoring wells, and the existing treatment system was evaluated.
No applicable.
Evaluate existing and newly acquired data to develop a comprehensive site conceptual model and evaluate options for treatment system upgrades and additional treatment options. A final report is anticipated by June 2005.
