EPA, ERRS (Guardian), and START (TechLaw) are continuing onsite activities to remove creosote from tank bottoms and standing vertical tanks. Contaminated sludges and soils beneath these tanks are also being staged for disposal.
Contaminated soils are being staged on poly at the rear (west) of the Site. Liquid creosote is being pumped into 55-gallon drums
The three tank bottoms were completed this date. Tank bottoms were decontaminated and stacked behind the vertical tanks on Site. These tanks will be left on Site as they no longer pose a threat of release of creosote.
27 drums of liquid creosote were removed from these bottoms and/or the contaminated liquids beneath these tanks. In all three cases, contaminated sludge and soil was found down to the groundwater table, approximately 5 feet below surface.
The next steps are to address the four vertical tanks. The tanks were assessed from above and found to contain from 5-15 feet of waste. This operation will begin next week.
EPA has determined that creososte contaminated soil is present throughout the tank area. At this time, this entire area is not being excavated. Efforts are focusing on the tanks and contaminated soils directly beneath the tanks.
