EPA, START, and ERRS continue removal actions to remove creosote and creosote-contaminated soils. Efforts this week focused mostly on removal of contaminated soils.
ERRS remobilized to the Site on 7/10/06. On Tuesday, 7/11/06, ERRS completed decontamination of Tank #4. Tank #4 was toppled and removed from the Site.
ERRS also drained a subsurface pipe which extended from the tank bottom area through the containment berm which crosses the Site. Originally, both the Site operator and EPA suspected that this pipe ran north across the Site to the adjacent property. However, upon excavation, ERRS revealed that the pipe made a sharp right-hand turn into the area of the former railroad spur line. The contaminated soil above the pipe was removed and the pipe was drained and marked.
OSC Wagner was not onsite this week until Friday 7/14/06 due to other removal program commitments. ERRS began excavation of contaminated soils on the right side of the access road (facing the large tank)and backfilled as needed.
On Friday 7/14, ERRS dismantled the loading dock which connected subsurfacely to the tank bottom area.
Continued excavation and transportation and disposal of subsurface soils are planned for next week.
Costs below reflect an ERRS ceiling increase from $400,000 to $500,000.
