Site Description
This is an ongoing response to a chemical fire and explosion in Danvers Massachusetts.  Two companies, CAI Inc. and Arnell Co were co-located in a building on Water Street.  At approximately 0300hrs, a fire and explosion of unknown origin resulted in the destruction of the building and significant damage to many homes and businesses in the vicinity.  There were no fatalities; several persons were hospitalized, but all have been released as of 11/25/06.

Current Activities
Since POLREP #10, the following activities have been conducted:

Week of 1 January

- Liquid contents from the vats were pumped into drums, categorized for disposal, and staged for shipment;
- Solid contents from the vats were removed, categorized for disposal, and packaged into drums and staged for shipment;
- Drums were over-packed, categorized for disposal, and staged for shipment;
- Small containers were over-packed into drums and staged for shipment; and
- Steel and building debris was steel was segregated and removed from the building footprint;

Week of 8 January

- Liquid contents from the vats were pumped into drums, categorized for disposal, and staged for shipment (all liquid contents have been pumped into drums);
- Solid contents from the vats were removed and packaged into drums, categorized for disposal, and staged for shipment (all solid contents are anticipated to be packaged into drums by 1/13/07);
- Drums were over-packed, categorized for disposal, and staged for shipment;
- Small containers were over-packed into drums, categorized for disposal, and staged for shipment;
- Steel and building debris was steel was segregated and removed from the building footprint;
- 1 re-hydrated nitrocellulose drum was shipped off site for disposal;
- 60 drums of flammable solids were shipped off site for disposal;
- 60 drums of flammable liquids were shipped off site for disposal;
- 3 roll-off containers (40 cubic yards each) of steel were loaded and transported off site to a recycler; and
- The OSC met with Danvers Electric, Verizon, and City of Danvers Building Dept to discuss the logistics of restoring utilities to the marina through the Site.  

Throughout removal operations, EPA continues to conduct air monitoring and sampling as needed and in accordance with the site Ambient Air Monitoring and Sampling Plan.  Evaluation of the air analytical data is being coordinated with ATSDR, Mass. Dept. of Public Health, and Mass DEP.  



Planned Removal Actions
EPA will facilitate restoring utilities to the marina.  Work is projected for Sunday 1/21/07.


Key Issues
Continue coordination with local and state partners for non-site related activites to ensure safety during the EPA removal aciton.
