Site Description
At approximately 0300hrs, a fire and explosion of unknown origin resulted in the destruction of the CAI/Arnel building and significant damage to many homes and businesses in the vicinity.  There were no fatalities; several persons were hospitalized, but all have been released as of 11/25/06.

For additional background information, see previous POLREPS.

Current Activities
Since POLREP #12, the following activities have been conducted:

Consolidation, transportation, and disposal of the wastes from the Site and cleanup of the building footprint has been completed.

CAI/Arnel have fenced and secured access to their property. The investigator's evidence container was relocated inside the fence. EPA transfered Site control back to the property owners on February 9, 2007.

EPA completed all Site activites, including the last soil shipment, on March 9, 2007. Personnel and all equipment were demobilized from the Site.

After the removal of scrap steel from the staging area, surface soil samples were collected and the top 6-12 inches of soil were excavated and staged for disposal. A second round of samples was collected from the excavated area.   No post excavation sample results had concentrations of chemicals exceeding Massachusetts Contingency Plan Commercial Property Soil Standards.

Throughout removal operations, EPA conducted air monitoring and sampling in accordance with the site Ambient Air Monitoring and Sampling Plan and/or as directed by the Environmental Unit Leader. Health assessments were coordinated with ATSDR, Mass. Dept. of Public Health, and Mass DEP.
