EPA, START, and ERRS continue removal actions to remove creosote and creosote-contaminated soils. Efforts this week focused mostly on transportation and disposal of contaminated soils.
Transportation and disposal of contaminated soils was conducted this week. Creosote-contaminated soils are being transported to Ross Incineration in Grafton, Ohio. The OSC checked with the CERCLA offsite compliance officer in EPA Region 5 to ensure this facility was in compliance. To date, 168.61 tons of contaminated soil have been removed. ERRS also sifted the piles of soil to remove debris from the former tank bases and excavation area. Contaminated debris and metal is being separated from contaminated soil.
OSC to request additional funding to complete T&D of contaminated soils and perform additional excavation work at the Site.
An ERRS employee was injured on Site on 7/20/06 when he was accidentally cut with a power tool while cutting up debris. He was transported by emergency medical services to the hospital for treatment. The employee was treated and released.
