Site Description
Onsite activities continue to focus on transportation and disposal of contaminated soils.

Current Activities
Transportation and disposal of contaminated soils continued. 11 loads weighing approximately 220 tons were removed on 8/1.  Ten additional loads weighing approximately 200 loads were removed on 8/2.  Total removed to date during the 2007 operations is currently is 34 loads weighing approximately 680 tons.

The loads are being tranported by over the road trucks to a CSX loading area approximately three miles from the Site.  The contents are then dumped at the yard into railcars.  

On 8/2, the OSC and ERRS Response Manager drove to the loading area to observe operations.  We confirmed that the railcars are being lined prior to dumping and that railcars awaiting transport are also covered.

The Site operator repaired a well on Site which will be part of EPA's extent of contamination sampling.  This well is NOT used for drinking water.  However, EPA wishes to sample the well to obtain the most comprehensive information available for the extent of contamination study.  START will sample this well next week.



Planned Removal Actions
EPA will continue transportation and disposal activities under the current contract.  Once the subcontract contract funds are expended, EPA will continue excavation work under the new contract.  A temporary demobilzation may be needed to transition between contracts.

Next Steps
Transportation and disposal activities will continue through at least next week.

START will perform sampling of onsite well and surface water on 8/6/07, weather dependent.

Key Issues
1.  A sheen with a creosote odor was observed on the Elizabeth River during this time frame.  This sheen is unrelated to any Site activities or any current activities at the Site.  The OSC suspects the sheen is more likely generated by the creosote contaminated sediments in this general area of the River

2.  All loads being transported offsite are covered and placarded.

3.  Please note there was a typographical error in POLREP #20 in the Waste Steam Section.  Loads were listed as 3-14 instead of 3-13.  A single manifest was mistakenly entered twice.  The correct number of loads for this date was 11, as listed in the body of the polrep.  This error has been corrected.  However, those who received a previous copy will have this error on the report.
