Site Description
Onsite activities continue to focus on transportation and disposal of contaminated soils.  Excavation of the area beneath the staged soil pile began on 8/6/07.

Current Activities
Transportation and disposal of contaminated soils continued.  Ten loads weighing approximately 200 tons of contaminated soil were removed on 8/3/07.  An additional four loads were removed on Saturday 8/4/07.  On Monday, 8/6/07, ten more loads were removed.  A total of 58 loads were removed to date during the 2007 operations for a total estimated weight of 1160 tons.

Since the staged soil pile is almost gone, ERRS began excavation of the back northwestern corner of the Site.  Specifically, this is the area to the left of the large tank on Site to the back wall of the property.  These soils are also being staged for disposal.

In the course of excavation, ERRS uncovered a large concrete "vault" approximately 10'x6'x3' which contained creosote sludge residue and old pipes.  This piece of debris appears very old and was probably used in the creosote transport operations performed during the Bernuth-Lembcke or Eppinger & Russell days.  This, of course, is the OSC's speculation.  The Site operator was on Site at the time this debris was excavated and had no knowledge of its presence or past use.  The Site operator told the OSC that this piece of debris was never used by Hazel Court Enterprises and he did not know it was there until the excavation today.  

START onsite this week to sample remaining well, work on Extent of Contamination (Phase II) report, and oversee Site operations.

Planned Removal Actions
EPA will continue transportation and disposal activities under the current contract until the funds in the subcontract are expended.

Next Steps
Transportation and disposal to continue through the week.  START will assist with oversight as OSC will be assigned to other regional commitments this week.

Key Issues
Laboratory costs associated with the Phase II sampling are not being billed against the Site ceiling as these costs are assessment costs rather than removal costs.
