Start Date: 4/28/2008
Pollution Report (POLREP) #13
Site Description
The facility was known to use chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to treat fence lumber and mine lumber. Arsenic contamination has been determined as the main contaminant of concern, and an Action Memorandum has been approved for the removal of arsenic contaminated soils, sediments and residual CCA product in the pressure vessels and tanks on site.

Current Activities
Crews are continuing the cleanup of Pressure Vessel 01 (PV01), using scraping, metal wheel grinding and pressure washing to remove residual CCA waste from the floor and walls of the 60'X5' pressure vessel.

Pressure Vessel 02 (PV02) cleanup operations have been initiated. The CCA product in PV02 is a dough-like consistency, as opposed to the hardened product in PV01. PV02 is approximately 40' in length.

Soil excavation has been conducted along the northern side of the facility, and heading east towards the site entrance. A large concrete slab and electrical service cables were discovered during excavation activities along the north eastern portion of the facility. These areas will be further investigated to determine if treatment operations had occurred in these areas.

Planned Removal Actions
Cleanup operations in PV02 will continue. PV01 cleanup activities should be completed by the end of this week.

The remaining 6 tanks inside the facility will have cleanup operations continue throughout the upcoming week.

Soil excavation will continue heading east towards the facility entrance, and into the drainage ditches along the eastern and portion of the facility.

Next Steps
PV01 will be investigated by the OSC to determine if additional steps are necessary to continue operations inside this vessel.

A clean fill material contractor has been selected, and START had collected samples of the fill material to determine if material is suitable for onsite backfill material. The fill material will not enter the site until this determination has been made through the anayltical results.

Key Issues
A concrete pad and electrical service cables were discovered during excavation operations along the north eastern portion of the existing concrete pad. This area will be investigated to ensure that prior wood treatment operations were not conducted in this area. Also, all soils in this area are already slated to be disposed of as hazwaste in this location.
