The facility was known to use chromated copper arsenate (CCA) to treat fence lumber and mine lumber. Arsenic contamination has been determined as the main contaminant of concern, and an Action Memorandum has been approved for the removal of arsenic contaminated soils, sediments and residual CCA product in the pressure vessels and tanks on site.
All contaminated soils have been transported and disposed of off-site. All hazardous concrete, metal and wood debris, all wastewater derived from removal action activities, along with spent PPE, has been transported from the site for disposal.
WVDEP, the Mineral County Commissioners Office, and the Mineral County Office of Emergency Management will periodically check on the site to ensure that the facility remains inoperable.
The Mineral County Commissioners Office has been briefed on the overall removal action, and made aware that since contaminatioon at depth remains at the site, but the pathway to contamination is eliminated, deed restrictions should be implemented in the event that the Kessel property is sold for future reuse or development.
Many costs associated with this Removal Action are pending (i.e. transportation and disposal costs for waste disposal). Once all costs have incurred, the final removal action cost will be reflected.
