The Site is a former orchard area that has had residential development. Prior to an EPA ban in 1972, a variety of pesticides including lead-arsenates and DDT compounds were applied.
EPA conducted a removal action at one property at the Crozet Arsenic Site in Crozet, Virginia. Historical sampling indicated that additional properties may need removal work.
To date, twelve properties have had removal work due to arsenic concentrations above 58 mg/kg.
EPA and ERRS mobilized to the site on May 12th.
ERRS excavated 3 plots at the Highlander Way Property (#'s 1, 6, 15) and properly shipped and disposed the waste offsite. The soil was brought to Old Dominion landfill (manifest # 484916) in Richmond VA.
ERRS prepared and planted 13 plots of ferns for phytoremediation (#'s 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 20, 21, 22, and 24).
ERRS installed two irrigation tanks and piping to supply water to the plots from onsite springs.
All personnel demobilized by May 22.
EPA will monitor the irrigation system and fern growth throughout the summer.
ERRS will harvest the ferns at the end of the growing season.
