The Site is a former orchard area that has had residential development. Prior to an EPA ban in 1972, a variety of pesticides including lead-arsenates and DDT compounds were applied.
EPA conducted a removal action at one property at the Crozet Arsenic Site in Crozet, Virginia. Historical sampling indicated that additional properties may need removal work.
To date, twelve properties have had removal work due to arsenic concentrations above 58 mg/kg.
One property continues to have removal work done. Phytoremediation was being used to remove the arsenic contamination.
August 2009, EPA approved an increase in ceiling and change of scope Action Memorandum. This authorized an additional $50k and allowed for excavated in areas that were previously addressed with phytoremediation. Originally, the phytoremediation areas were scheduled for 3 years of growing. However, data showed little progress in 5 of the original plots (with all others being completed).
ERRS excavated and disposed of arsenic contaminated soil from plot #'s 5, 12, 16, 20, and 22. A total of 11 (20 yd) rolloffs of soil were shipped to "The East End Landfill" in Richmond, VA for disposal. The soil was non-haz.
ERRS backfilled and restored all of the plots as well as any areas affected by removal activities. Native seed was planted and ersosion control matting and straw was installed to prevent seed loss.
As of September 17th, 2009 all removal action activities at the Site are complete.

EPA will compile a detailed report for the property at which the phytoremediation took place. This report will be provided to the owner of the property.
