Site Description
Lawrence Technological University Maintenance Department, 2100 West 10 Mile Road, Southfield, Michigan.

NRC notification of leaking drums.

Current Activities
October 26, 2004, Section Chief Jason El-Zein followed up on NRC Incident Report #739523, primary responder OSC Brian Kelly had responded to an earlier emergency response.  The report described 5 drums releasing oil to the ground.  SC El-Zein contacted Campus Safety Officer Harry Butler.  Mr. Butler said he checked the area and no spill had occurred.  SC El-Zein informed OSC Kelly of the report and directed him to follow up.

October 27, 2004, OSC Kelly called Carey Valentine Director of Campus Facilities.  Mr. Valentine said no spill had occurred.  Mr. Valentine said the University does store six drums of used oil outside.  Mr. Valentine said Heritage Environmental regularly picks up the drums for disposal/recycling.  Mr. Valentine said the University would call Heritage to have the drums removed and that in the future only one drum would be kept and it would be indoors.  Based on the conversations with Mr. Butler and Mr. Valentine OSC Kelly closed the report.

November 8, 2004, the Reporting Party called again to say a release was occurring.  The caller stated the release was affecting a nearby waterway.  The OSC again called Mr. Valentine who again said no spill had occurred.

November 9, 2004, OSC Kelly visited the site and met with Mr. Valentine and Mr. Butler.  The OSC found trace amounts of staining consistent with a typical maintenance shop.  No evidence of a spill affecting a navigable waterway was found.  OSC Kelly closed the report.
