The Crown Group (CG) Plant, which makes painted bumpers and window frames, is located at 100 Mill Street, Ecorse, Wayne County, Michigan.
The plant is approximately 5 miles south of Detroit.
On August 23, 2005, at approximately 1800 hours, fire fighters responded to a fire at the Crown Plant, which originated in one of the facility's paint booths. Ecorse fire department mobilized the Wayne County Emergency Management Team as well as the Downriver HAZMAT Team.
At the request of Wayne County EMA, EPA responded to assist with air monitoring. EPA employed a MultiRAE photoionization detector (PID)/four gas meter, and Drager tubes for cyanide and acid. EPA and Downriver HAZMAT found no levels above background outside the plant.
On August 24, 2005, at 0200 hours, the fire subsided. The Ecorse fire department, Wayne County Emergency Management Team, and Downriver HAZMAT Team demobilized from site, leaving one engine behind. The CG mobilized Clean Harbors to takeover air monitoring and to begin vacuuming standing water from around the facility.
At 1300 hours, the Ecorse fire department with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) completed a fire investigation of the facility and returned site control to CG. The facility manager, EPA, and START conducted a site walkthrough to document site conditions.
During the site walkthrough, none of the drums or tanks within the facility were found to be leaking. As no further threat existed, EPA demobilized from the site.
Clean Harbors will complete removal of standing water.
Clean Harbors will submit a copy of manifests and air monitoring results to EPA.
