Current Activities
April 13, 2009 (Monday)
• ERRS continued the removal of the Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM) from the fire damaged portion of the building.
• ERRS began loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site.
• ERRS continued the collection of PCB-containing ballasts and capacitors throughout the Site.
• ERRS continued the collection of drums and totes and staged them on the concrete pad on the south portion of the Site for hazardous waste characterization.
• START continued to collect perimeter air samples for asbestos as well as performed real time dust monitoring.  START collected solid samples as necessary to determine if material contained asbestos.

April 14, 2009 (Tuesday)
• ERRS continued the removal of the Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM) from the fire damaged portion of the building.
• ERRS continued loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site.
• ERRS continued loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site.
• City of Canton's water department was onsite to repair a fire hydrant that was being used as a water source.
• START continued to collect perimeter air samples for asbestos as well as performed real time dust monitoring.  START collected solid samples as necessary to determine if material contained asbestos.

April 15, 2009, (Wednesday)
• ERRS continued the removal of the Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM) from the fire damaged portion of the building.
• ERRS continued loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site.
• Four (4) 20-yard roll-off boxes containing ACWM transported off site for disposal.
• ERRS removed two (2) sections of masonry walls which were identified as unsafe.
• START continued to collect perimeter air samples for asbestos as well as performed real time dust monitoring.  START collected solid samples as necessary to determine if material contained asbestos.

April 16, 2009, (Thursday)
• ERRS continued the removal of the Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM) from the fire damaged portion of the building.
• ERRS continued loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site.
• Six (6) 20-yard roll-off boxes containing ACWM transported off site for disposal.
• ERRS continued the collection of drums and totes and staged them on the concrete pad on the south portion of the Site for hazardous waste characterization.
• START continued to collect perimeter air samples for asbestos as well as performed real time dust monitoring.  START collected solid samples as necessary to determine if material contained asbestos.

April 17, 2009, (Friday)

• ERRS continued the removal of the Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM) from the fire damaged portion of the building.
• ERRS continued loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site.
• eight (8) 20-yard roll-off boxes containing ACWM transported off site for disposal.
• START continued to collect perimeter air samples for asbestos as well as performed real time dust monitoring.  START collected solid samples as necessary to determine if material contained asbestos.

Perimeter air samples were received for the previous week and all samples were less than the sites action limit.  Real time dust monitoring results for the week were less than the sites action limit.


Planned Removal Actions
-- Initiate removal of asbestos contaminated debris from the fire (estimated 7,500 tons)

-- Perform extent of contamination investigation of PCB contaminated soil from leaking transformers.

-- Initiate removal of PCB contaminated soil (estimated 3,000 tons)

-- Consolidate, sample, perform hazardous categorization and off-site disposal of all drums and containers on the site (estimated 100 drums, 100 totes and misc small containers).

-- Remove and dispose of PCB contaminated water from the pits associated with the building

-- Remove transformers containing PCB oil

-- Remove and dispose of silica quartz dust/sand, as necessary


Next Steps
-- A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 at the local library.

-- US EPA CIC will send out a Fact Sheet about the site and visit the nearby residents prior to the public meeting.


Key Issues
-- Residents are located directly across the street from the site.  As such daily perimeter air samples for asbestos will be collected during all asbestos related work.
