Current Activities
Daily Activities

• ERRS continued the removal of the Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials (ACWM) from the fire damaged portion of the building.
• ERRS continued loading roll-off boxes containing Asbestos-Containing Waste Materials for disposal off-site (either American Landfill or Minerva Landfill in Waynesburg, Ohio).
• ERRS continued the collection of drums and totes and staged them on the concrete pad on the south portion of the Site for hazardous waste characterization.
• START performed daily collection of perimeter air samples for asbestos and monitored the perimeter for total dust readings.  In addition, START inspected different areas of the building and collected bulk samples as necessary for asbestos identification.
• Perimeter air monitoring results for total dust did not exceed the sites action levels.  All perimeter air sampling results to date have been non-detect for asbestos fibers.

On Saturday, April 18, 2004 the Canton Fire Department was called to the site due to odors emanating from the site.  The Fire Department determined that a natural gas line from inside the burned portion of the building had ruptured.   The Dominion Gas Company was on site to shut off the gas.  This line was unmarked and not on the gas companies maps as being present.

On Monday, April 20, 2008 the Dominion Gas Company was on site and physically disconnected the line from the main feed.  ERRS carefully moved the debris from against the standing wall in the areas that are being demolished and checked for additional lines.  Five roll-off boxes (Approximately 85 tons) of ACWM debris left site for disposal.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2008 five roll-off boxes (Approximately 87 tons) of ACWM debris left site for disposal.

On Wednesday, April 22, 2008 seven roll-off boxes (Approximately 117 tons) of ACWM debris left site for disposal.

On Thursday, April 23, 2008 ten roll-off boxes (Approximately 137 tons) of ACWM debris left site for disposal.  START inspected the courtyard area where an additional electrical transformer was found.  The transformer is empty; however labeling indicates that it contained PCB oil.  Several samples were collected and screened were screened using both Chlor-n-Soil and Chlor-n-Oil test kits. Preliminary results indicated that PCB contamination is present in that area.

On Friday, April 24, 2008 ten roll-off boxes (Approximately 152 tons) of ACWM debris left site for disposal.

On Saturday, April 25, 2008 ERRS was on site and cleared the sidewalk north of the burned building.   The sidewalk was cleared in order to encourage foot traffic to avoid walking next to the fire damaged building.

Planned Removal Actions
-- Continue removal of asbestos contaminated debris from the fire damaged portion of the building(estimated 7,500 tons).

-- Perform extent of contamination investigation of PCB contaminated soil from leaking transformers.

-- Initiate removal of PCB contaminated soil (estimated 3,000 tons).

-- Consolidate, sample, perform hazardous categorization and off-site disposal of all drums and containers on the site (estimated 100 drums, 100 totes and misc small containers).

-- Remove and dispose of PCB contaminated water from the pits associated with the building.

-- Remove transformers containing PCB oil.

-- Remove and dispose of silica quartz dust/sand, as necessary.

Next Steps
-- A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 at the local library.

-- US EPA CIC will send out a Fact Sheet about the site and visit the nearby residents prior to the public meeting.

Key Issues
-- Residents are located directly across the street from the site. As such daily perimeter air samples for asbestos will be collected during all asbestos related work.

Disposition Of Wastes
A total of 733 tons of asbestos contaminated debris went off site to Minerva Landfill, Waynesburg, Ohio for disposal.

A total of 134 tons of asbestos contaminated debris went off site to American Landfill, Waynesburg, Ohio for disposal.
