OSC Karen Buerki was dispatched to the scene of a leaking aviation kerosene pipeline, NRC Report #890073, at the Colonial Pipeline Company Atlanta Junction Breakout Tank Farm in Austell, GA. During the day on November 14, 2008, Colonial Pipeline personnel discovered a leak of approximately 2000 gallons a day and as of nightfall on Friday, the source had not yet been found.
OSC Buerki consulted with Colonial's Environmental Manager, Jeff Richards, providing oversight of the cleanup operations. Colonial hired SWS and HEPACO and both had crews on-scene. An interceptor trench was dug to recover the leaking kerosene. No kerosene had reached the oil/water separator or stormwater pond. There does not appear to be a threat of a discharge to surface water at this time.
Colonial will continue to excavate around the pump manifolds to locate and repair the leak.
