On March 27, 2009, Buckeye Partners, L.P. reported a potential discharge from a pipeline check valve after finding elevated soil vapor readings. Later Buckeye Partners reported to the On-Scene Coordinator diesel in a trench 20 feet from the pipeline.
The discharge occurred in the parking lot of the Valleaire Golf Course and threated East Branch Creek.
After being notified of the discovery of diesel, the OSC responded to investigate the release. Once on-site, the OSC reviewed the cleanup activities of the responsible party and issued a notice of federal interest to Buckeye Partners.
Cleanup work included removal of five roll-off boxes of contaminated soil, evacuation of the pipeline, and replacement of the check valve.
The emergency response has been completed. Final closure of the site will occur under Ohio EPA.
The release is estimated at less than 100 gallons of diesel. No media interest was identified and no wildlife was impacted.
