In late July 2009, NC DENR requested EPA Reg 4 assistance with assessing several contaminated drinking water wells around the Charlotte, NC area. ERRB Reg 4 began assessing twelve sites in a five county area and obtained access agreements from potentially contaminated homes around each of these sites.
During July and August 2009, several drinking water wells along Southside Road were sampled for chlorinated solvents and three wells were identified as exceeding EPA's action level, 1878 Southside (55 ppb PCE), 1904 Southside (50 ppb PCE), and 1938 Southside (45 ppb PCE).
The OSC, working with the Phone Duty OSC, drafted an emergency action memo and task order to fund waterline hook ups with all three affected homes under CERCLA. Discussions were held with all three residents and they agreed to have their homes hooked up to the waterline which paralleled Southside Road. ERRs contractors tasked local contractors to complete the waterline hook ups and all efforts were coordinated with the Lincoln County Water Authority.
No further actions are anticipated.
