In late July 2009, NC DENR requested EPA Reg 4 assistance with assessing several contaminated drinking water wells around the Charlotte, NC area. ERRB Reg 4 began assessing twelve sites in a five county area and obtained access agreements from potentially contaminated homes around each of these sites.
One site was the former Gastonia Industrial Trucking site along Hemphill Road in Gastonia, NC. The previous owner of this property allegedly dumped drum waste and cleaned drums for recycling which resulted in contaminating several water wells with TCE (trichloroethylene). The current business owner operates a forklift repair service and does not use chlorinated solvents in his operation.
EPA's technical assistance contractor, Tetra Tech, sampled two monitoring wells on site and the one well supplying the facility with water. In addition, two residents located across from the facility were sampled both having carbon filtration systems which were previously installed.
The monitoring wells at the forklift repair shop indicated trichloroethylene levels at 30 ppb and 120 ppb respectively and the well supplying the facility was found to contain 180 ppb. The few employees at this facility do not drink or bath with the water, so no actions were taken by EPA.
TCE levels at the homes immediately across from the facility at 4825 and 4901 Hemphill Road were found to be elevated post filtration system (220 and 170 ppb). The OSC consulted with EPA Technical Services Glenn Adams and were in agreement that the elevated TCE levels were most likely do to the carbon in the filtration systems being saturated with TCE. EPA assisted these residents by finding a local supplier to switch out their carbon filters. No further actions were taken.
No further actions.
