The W.R. Grace Site is located in Wilder, Campbell County, Kentucky. W.R. Grace ("Grace") owned and operated a vermiculite ore processing facility at 112 North St. from 1960 until the mid-1990's. Residues from the processing operation were disposed of on the Grace property and an adjoining tract as fill material. The vermiculite ore and the residues contain actinolite and tremolite asbestos fibers.
In April 2003, EPA initiated a time critical removal action at the site, at the request of the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (KYDEP). The scope of work involves removal and off-site disposal of up to 40,000 tons of asbestos-contaminated soil, and the decontamination of two buildings formerly used in the vermiculite manufacturing operations.
March 26, 2004 to April 2, 2004
On March 31, OSCs Bass and Smith and ERRS PM met with property owners Doug Myers and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Grau to conduct a tour of the site and address any questions or concerns prior to demobilization. No significant issues were raised at this time. During the duration of this removal project, approximately 26,445 tons of Asbestos Contaminated Material (ACM) was disposed of and 2000 lbs of a 40/60 mix of Rye/Fescue grass seed was used to cover the excavated and regraded areas. The site was also regraded for drainage control and coffer dams were created along various drainage pathways. ERRS completed site restoration activities and demobilized all personnel and equipment from the site on April 2, 2004.
ERRS contractor to return to site to repair an area of water retention that was not successfully addressed during the initial site restoration. No further removal activity is planned for this site.
