During the week of May 6, 2003, the remaining 15 cubic yards of dangerous waste (DW) were removed from site and transported to a RCRA C landfill. The single days removal turned into an all-week event due to PRPs storage of material on-site for the winter. The DW was stored in a double-lined holding pit for the winter. This pit was approved for short-term storage during dry months of the year. The PRP was ordered to remove the waste before wet weather arrived but refused.
Due to their refusal to remove the DW before winter, the pit cover failed allowing water to infiltrate the DW pit. Additional wood and metal debris (see photo) were added to the DW pit last Fall making the removal more challenging. The debris was separated out of the DW and wastewater pumped into 55-gallon barrels (approx. 2500 gals). Fly ash was then added to stabilize the material for transport. The stabilized material was loaded on May 8, 2003 and transported May 12th.
The PRP is currently investigating what funding resources they have left. We will prioritize the remaining cleanup tasks and have the PRP do what they can. After their resources are exhausted, the EPA will takeover the remainder of the work.
