The Site is vacant land located at 163 River Rd., Edgewater, Bergen County, New Jersey, at the intersection with Gorge Rd., in close proximity to the Quanta Edgewater Superfund Site. Currently this vacant land is being developed into apartments, stores, and a promenade.

An EPA Hotline notification came in on May 17, 2001 from the NRC reporting a release of hydrogen sulfide, hexavalent chrome, arsenic, and mercury from the construction site.

In a subsequent conference call with OSHA, we learned that during pile driving operations, workers began to get sick from the dust being created, and started to exhibit blisters and what appeared to be chemical burns on their face and other areas of exposed skin. There was also a release of hydrogen sulfide that sickened workers.

EPA will assist OSHA in the incident investigation.
