On 2 August 2015 Typhoon Soudelor made landfall at CNMI as a Category 2 typhoon, directly over Saipan and very near Tinian. Soudelor brought winds near 105 mph, heavy rains and coastal inundation.

The power plant on Saipan is down, and the electrical distribution system was heavily damaged with a number of power poles having toppled. Associated transformers have been damaged, many have leaked oil. What limited power currently exists is being provided by generator.

Due to the loss of power, drinking water is extremely scarce, Some water is being produced by wells and RO units and water distribution points are being established.
