On 01 October 2015, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) personnel responded to a call and identified approximately 200mCi of old medical radium sources from a private residence. Due to the potential for significant radiological dosage to members of the public, the Radiation Division (RD) of CT DEEP secured and transported the sources to their radiological material storage location. On 28 January 2016, CT DEEP requested EPA assistance to properly dispose of the radiological material.
Inventory and activity measurements resulted in the following:
2 Tubes - Dose Rate of 120 mR/hr
9 Needles - Dose Rate of 12 mR/hr
1 Plaque - 30 mR/hr
On 09 March 2016, OSC Mike Barry, Radiation Program Manager Tony Honnellio, CTDEEP personnel, and 2-3 Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) personnel will conduct a PA/SI to evaluate the potential danger to public health and/or the environment.
