This Site is a defunct auto repair shop that went out of business in 2002. A new owner took possession of the property about 6 months ago.
Based on an anonymous e-mail sent to EPA, the OSC went to the Site as an Emergency Response. Upon arriving on the scene the OSC noted the premises were open and in a serious state of deterioraration. Inside the building was a cylinder of compressed gas and a few 5 gallon pails of paint. In the rear of the building was a small box trailer, in which was approx. 50 similar pails of waste paint and solvent. Behind the building were a few more 5-gallon pails of wastes, and behind a dumpster
was a 55-gallon drum of paint wastes.
The OSC notified the NYSDEC Spill Response unit which responded from the Long Island office. The OSC also notified the Suffolk County PD which responded to the Site. Subsequently, the Suffolk County DA's office sent two Environmental Crimes Unit detectives to the Site.
The new owner was contacted and informed that he had to have the pails and other items removed ASAP. The following day he contracted with a removal company to overpack and remove all the pails and other wastes.
A generator's ID was obtained from EPA, and on 10/29 the wastes were removed and shipped for disosal.
