On February 29, 2016, the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) requested the assistance of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at the Bethel Avenue Paint Site (Site). The Site is a dilapidated strip mall that has been vacant for several years or more. The strip mall consists of 8 individual storefronts. One business formerly located at the strip mall was a paint and stain store. When the strip mall was vacated, paints, stains and other paint related materials were abandoned in four storefronts at the strip mall. The property was donated to a neighborhood church and the church does not have the resources to properly dispose of the wastes.

EPA On-Scene Coordinator Jason Sewell met with MCPHD and IDEM. IDEM does not have the resources to dispose of the paint wastes. Sewell will be working with MCPHD, IDEM and current and past owners and operators to ensure proper waste disposal.
