On Tuesday, 3 May 2016, the Washington State Department of Ecology contacted EPA Region 10’s Emergency Response Program about five (5) 55-gallon drums illegally disposed in a wetland located along a county road (192nd Street East) located in Pierce County, Washington. Based upon the photos that were submitted to EPA from Ecology, some of the drums looked to be in poor physical condition and tipped over on their side in the wetland. In addition, the photos showed a visible sheen on the water surface. It was unclear whether the sheen was from the drums, if the drums were leaking, or if they contained oil or hazardous substances. OSC Zavala and START contractors mobilized to the incident location with ERRS contractors to assist with disposal or/and over-packing of the drums if needed for mitigation purposes.
