THIS IS AN EXERCISE

STATUS: A deliberate release of mercury on the Larkspur Ferry and BART has snarled the Bay Area transportation system. EPA has received a request from SFFD for assistance as they have limited mercury monitoring capability. At least four counties are impacted. It is possible that SFO is impacted as well. At a minimum, the BART stations between Embarcadero Station and Coliseum Station in Oakland will need to be assessed.

LOCAL/STATE/FEDERAL ACTION: BART and the four impacted counties (San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Marin) have set up an Area Command.

EPA ACTION: San Francisco FD has requested EPA assistance to assess the transportation systems that have been impacted by the mercury release. We are deploying on-scene coordinators to assist with mercury assessment and we have deployed a liaison officer to the Area Command being set up with BART, the four impacted counties and the ferry operators. The EOA REOC is activated with Planning, Situation Unit, Environmental Unit and PIO functions.

MEDIA INTEREST: None yet but we expect it to be high
