At approximately 0950 on Sunday morning, 7 May 2017, a fire broke out at Seattle Iron & Metal, 601 South Myrtle St. Seattle, WA. EPA received notification at approximately 1130 and mobilized OSC Zavala to provide assistance. The fire had been extinguished upon arrival but due to the large amounts of fire fighting water and the proximity to the Duwamish River, potential releases were of concern.
In an interview of a facility’s representative, it was determined that the facility had a 8,000 gallons storm water retention and treatment system which was capturing the runoff water. The system as well as the outfall was investigated; the outfall was closed and there were no signs of a release. OSC Zavala demobilized at approximately 1430.
