Report as of: 1630, 21 August 2017

Overview: EPA received a report of the illegal dumping of at least eight bags of material labeled as “asbestos - danger” along a road in rural Pierce County, Washington. The bags have been found approximately 500 feet apart along the side of Rocky Creek Road and some bags have been compromised.

State, Local and other Federal Agency Actions: Pierce County Public Works identified the illegally discarded material but they do not have the expertise to address asbestos containing material. The Washington Department of Ecology requested EPA assistance in identifying whether the material contains asbestos and recovering, as necessary, to mitigate the threat of a release.

EPA Actions: Region 10 OSC Parker responded to the reported location and verified the release. EPA continues to assess the threat and will take any necessary mitigation actions.
