On August 22-24, 2017, EPA initiated and completed a time-critical removal action at the Red Cliff Abandoned Waste Site located on the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indian Reservation in Bayfield, WI. EPA and its contractors worked with Tribal Environmental Staff and Wardens to secure, characterize, repackage for transport, and dispose of hazardous materials, including flammable/combustible materials, corrosives, oxidizers, and poisons, abandoned across the reservation that threatened public health and the environment. As part of this action, EPA also conducted an educational campaign regarding abandoned waste and spill response with the Red Cliff Tribe. This involved spill response training and a boom deployment exercise that USCG and WDNR assisted EPA with as well as establishing a used oil recycling program for Red Cliff.
