Moulten Yellow Jacket Mine is located within operable unit (OU) two of the Carpenter-Snow Creek National Priority List Site (NPL) in the upper drainage of Rock Creek in the Little Belt Mountains. This is approximately one mile north of the Town of Neihart in Cascade County, MT. Three abandoned electrical transformers are located adjacent to the mine’s former air compressor shed. These transformers contain oil that has elevated polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) levels.

The EPA’s Emergency Response and Removal Services (ERRS) contractor mobilized on September 14, 2017. The goal of this removal will be to safely drain the transformers of oil, containerize these fluids and transport them off-site to an appropriate disposal facility. The transformer casings will also be transported off-site and disposed of at an appropriate facility.
