The Brown Street Furniture Company (the site) is comprised of several lots and is located at 87 Brown Street, in Whitefield, NH. The site consists of several adjoining buildings, including one brick building, as well as two storage sheds. The site was originally used as a sawmill in the early to mid-1900s and subsequently as a furniture manufacturing company (Brown Street Furniture) from late 1960s to 2012. In 2012, the Brown Street Furniture Company went out of business.

In September 2015, NHDES personnel conducted a hazardous waste inspection of the Brown Street Furniture Company to inventory the hazardous waste that remained in the building. NHDES inspectors observed numerous drums and containers in the building containing hazardous waste, including paint related waste, corrosive adhesives, and flammable solids. On September 28, 2015, EPA received a request for assistance from NHDES to investigate the site.

On April 12, 2016, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) On-Scene Coordinator (OSC) Marcus Holmes and Weston Solutions, Inc., Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) mobilized to the site to conduct a Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation (PA/SI).

On September 29 2016, an Action Memorandum for Request for a Time-Critical Removal Action was approved by the EPA Region 1 Office of Site Remediation and Restoration.

On October 5, 2016, EPA issued a Notice of Potential Liability and Invitation to Perform or Finance Proposed Cleanup Activities for the Brown Street Furniture Site in Whitefield, NH to the Potentially Responsible Party (PRP).

In April 2017, the PRP informed EPA that he was willing to perform the removal activities at the site. An Administrative Order of Consent (AOC), was developed by EPA and entered into by the PRP, identifying the components of work required for the performance of the Removal Action.

The PRP hired an environmental contractor, NRC East Environmental Services, Inc. (NRC), who conducted Removal Action activities on the site on January 29, 2018 and March 9, 2018.
