The City of Detroit requested the EPA's assistance with contaminated soil that was discovered when playground equipment was being installed at the City’s Collins Park.
The layer of blue soil near the ground surface is co-mingled with demolition debris and appears to have been used as a layer of fill at the site. The soil pile is from an excavation that the City of Detroit conducted at the property to erect new playground equipment.
Samples collected show lead levels in the soil above the State of Michigan's Direct Contact Criteria and levels that are characteristically toxic as defined by 40 C.F.R. § 261.24
