On October 26, 2018, EPA responded to a mercury chemical hoarder at the request of San Diego County Environmental Health Hazardous Incident Response Team (HIRT) at the Golden Triangle Storage facility located in the Sorrento Valley area of the City of San Diego, San Diego County, CA. Up arrival on-site, EPA observed four 10'x20' storage lockers and a 10' x 35' storage locker that were contaminated with mercury. Locker number 1, contained approximately 200 30-gallon plastic totes, five gallon buckets and 1 gallon buckets that contained a potpourri of chemicals including heavy metals, corrosives, oxidizers and class 9 chemicals. HIRT has surveyed a number of the storage containers with the chemicals and found high levels of mercury them. In Lockers 2,4 and 5, HIRT scanned a large number of boxes, bags and totes and found high levels of mercury. Based on this information, OSC Wise dispatched the START contractor and a second OSC and agreed to provide technical assistance to HIRT.
Removal operations began on October 27 and were completed on October 30, 2018. During the removal EPA also identified other homes and businesses associated with the PRP that had either confirmed or suspected mercury contamination. The removal at the storage facility generated four 20 cubic yard roll off bins of debris and approximately 50 lab packs.
